Frequently Asked Questions
An exercise physiologist is a university-qualified allied health professional who uses exercise and physical activity to improve and optimize health, function, and independence. They design and deliver exercise programs for various populations, including those with chronic diseases, injuries, and those seeking to improve their physical and mental well-being.
Generally, you do not need a referral from your doctor to see an exercise physiologist. If you are paying privately, you can make an appointment without needing a referral. However, a referral may be required if you are accessing services through Medicare, NDIS, DVA, Workers' Compensation, or other third-party payers. For example, to receive a Medicare rebate of $60.35 a care plan must be arranged via your GP if you are eligible. Ask your doctor if your health condition would benefit from a GP Management Plan or Team Care Arrangements. If you need one, your doctor will make a plan that outlines your health conditions. If your plan includes exercise physiology as part of your treatment, they will give you a referral.
Exercise physiologists and physiotherapists both help people get better through exercise. They focus on different things:
Exercise physiologists help people manage long-term health problems through exercise. They create exercise plans to help with chronic diseases and injuries. They also support lifestyle changes to improve your health and wellbeing.
Physiotherapists focus more on diagnosing and treating injuries, often in the early stages. They use hands-on techniques, education and exercise to help people recover. They also help improve how you move.
It varies from person to person. Most people require 4-6 sessions. Some enjoy continuing with one-on-one training sessions or their condition may require further assistance to exercise safely. Others are highly motivated, or may only need minor adjustments to their exercise program.
Yes, I do home visits for those with a Home Care Package. I don't charge extra for travel if you are within a 10km radius of Denmark town. Otherwise, most consultations are at Denmark Recreation Centre.
Exercise is critical to prepare you for surgery. The earlier you start exercising, the greater the benefit.
Exercise physiology can assist you in a number of ways, depending on the nature of the surgery you are undergoing. We can work with you to strengthen the muscles surrounding the affected joint PRIOR to surgery. This will accelerate your recovery post-surgery, as your muscles are stronger, which will aid in restoring function and movement to the operated joint.
We assist with exercise rehabilitation post-surgery, to improve muscle activation, movement control, and muscle strength around the affected joint, to speed up your recovery. In preparation for other types of exercise, we help you accelerate your recovery by improving your overall health, strength, and fitness.
Our exercise planning may include assisting you to lose weight prior to the operation, to reduce the risk of complications during surgery. The higher your health level prior to surgery, the lower your risk of complications and the faster your recovery post-surgery.
